Sep. 9th, 2008 11:00 am"Hey Torch, got a minute?" Ben asked as he came onto the roof of the Baxter Building.
"Sure Ben," Johnny replied casually (too casually?) as he carefully nudged the can of paint out of sight before he sat and reclined on one of the beach chairs. "What's on your mind?"
"You read about that business at Camp Hammond?" Ben asked as he sat on beach chair across from Johnny's.
"Yeah. Not good what happened," Johnny says hiding a smirk behind his hand.
"Well I was thinkin', the kids need to be trained right? Well, why does it have to be like that? What if we trained em?"
"What do you mean, sidekicks?" Johnny says in a voice which clearly says "No way am I taking on a sidekick".
"No, no. I'm thinkin' more like a Big Brother kind a thing. Nothing formal, just showing the kids the ropes and givin' them a place to practice that's theirs. I already bought a couple o' old factories in Jersey."
"I think your Yancy Street Youth Center has gotten to your head," Johnny replies.
"Johnny, I'm serious. You and me, we've a responsibility to the new generation. These kids are gonna learn how to do things whether we help or not. I just thought we should show them a way ta do it that isn't military or Avengers or what ever. The Fantastic Four way an' I can't think of anyone else I want to help me on this. Well, if I can get a hold of Jen, I'll ask her too. But I need you fer this."
Ben's words shock Johnny. He knows Ben cares for him but Ben never said anything like that out loud. "Thanks Ben, that means a lot and of course I'll do it. And listen, if I'd known this is what you wanted I would've stopped you sitting down. Sorry," Johnny says as he stands and runs off the roof yelling, "Flame On!"
"What?" Ben says as he stands and looks back at the seat he's been sitting on. There on the back he can see his silhouette in negative in the fresh paint. "Good one Kid," he thinks as he heads back inside.
